Building and Safety Commissioners

Members of the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor of the City of Los Angeles and confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council pursuant to the Charter of the City of Los Angeles. Each Commissioner is appointed for a term of five years, and all volunteer their time to preside at weekly Board of Building and Safety Commission meetings.

Under the City Charter, the Board has the power to make and/or approve slight modifications for individual cases in the provisions of the building ordinances of the City.

The Board of Building and Safety Commissioners convenes its meetings on Tuesdays at 201 North Figueroa Street, Room 900, Los Angeles, CA 90012.

Evangelos P. Ambatielos - President

Commissioner Ambatielos was confirmed as a member of the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners in May 2006. He is a native of Southern California where he attended public school in Manhattan Beach and received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Southern California. A 25-year resident of Los Angeles, Commissioner Ambatielos is a businessman and former public school educator. He taught Spanish for 15 years at Palos Verdes High School and served as Chairman for the Department of Foreign Language.

Eleanor Felicia Brannon - Vice President

Commissioner Brannon has worked in the field of Government and Community Relations for over 22 years in the non-profit, public, private, and academic sectors. When not using her talents as a professional, she has served as a Commissioner or volunteer for such organizations as the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority; the Workforce Investment Board; Leadership California; USC School of Planning, Policy and Development Alumni Board of Directors; the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute; the Epilepsy Foundation of Los Angeles; Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles; Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce; Volunteer Center of Los Angeles; Women’s Transportation Seminar; and, the Regional Advisory Council for the Southern California Association of Governments.

Joselyn Geaga-Rosenthal

Commissioner Geaga-Rosenthal has been a licensed Psychotherapist at various Student Health Centers on several campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District since 2006. Prior to that, she was employed by the County of Los Angeles with several departments including Health Services, Mental Health and Children and Family Services. She has served on the Los Angeles County Mental Health Commission for 12 years and she was a founding Board member of the Echo Park Neighborhood Council.

George V. Hovaguimian, P.E. - Commissioner

Commissioner Hovaguimian is the President of Airplus Engineering Consultants, an engineering company serving Southern California for over twenty years. In 1991, Commissioner Hovaguimian took a leave of absence to work as the Assistant Minister of Energy and Fuel for the then newly independent Republic of Armenia. Prior to his appointment to the Board of Building and Safety Commissioners, he served as a Commissioner with the City of Los Angeles City Planning Commission.

Javier Nunez - Commissioner

Commissioner Nunez has 36 years of experience in the construction industry and presides as President of the Laborers Local 300 in Los Angeles. Commissioner Nunez is a Minister and the Board Chair of the Victory Outreach Ministries of the San Fernando Valley. He also serves as the Board Chair of Communities in Schools in the San Fernando Valley, an organization which helps at-risk youth. Javier Nunez is a member of the Rotary Club of Greater Van Nuys. He previously served as Chair of the Arleta Neighborhood Council.
