A Sign language interpreter is a specialist trained in American Sign Language (ASL) and can facilitate communication with individuals who may be deaf or hard of hearing.
As of January 4, 2017, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety became the second City Department, after the Public Library, to offer Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) at all Department Services Centers. VRI assists deaf and hard-of-hearing customers by using a mobile device to connect these them with an online interpreter. When the VRI session begins, customers and LADBS staff will be able see, hear, and communicate with an interpreter through a built-in webcam in a mobile device provided by LADBS.
